The book presents the historical evolution of gold mining activities in the Egyptian and Nubian Desert (Sudan) from about 4000 BC until the Early Islamic Period (~800–1350 AD), subdivided into the main classical epochs including the Early Dynastic – Old and Middle Kingdoms – New Kingdom (including Kushitic) – Ptolemaic – Roman and Early Islamic.

The Sukari Gold Mine began production in 2009 and is the first large scale modern gold mine in Egypt, with a base case production rate of c.500,000 ounces per annum.

Egypt was known in the ancient world as being a source of gold, and one of the earliest available maps shows a gold mine at this location. It is a combination of an open-pit mine and an underground mine, with estimated reserves of 15.4 million ounces of gold. The site is supplied by a 30 km long pipeline bringing water from the Red Sea.

The Eastern Desert of Egypt is well known as a gold-mining area since ancient times and more than 90 gold deposits and occurrences are spread over the whole area covered by the basement rocks of Precam-brian age (Fig. 1). Records of mining for gold range back to predynastic times and mining activity contin-ued at different periods.
