Cement producer PPC Zimbabwe (PPC) is this month expecting to start building a new plant in Harare, Zimbabwe, after securing US$18 million for the project. The company is also planning to further increase output by building cement grinding plants in Mozambique's Tete province and Harare and a clinker facility in Zimbabwe's Mount Darwin district.

Zimbabwe/Mozambique: South African cement manufacturer PPC's (Pretoria Portland Cement) Zimbabwean subsidiary, Portland Holdings Limited (PHL), is to build a new cement plant in the country to service its markets in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The new plant will produce about 1Mt/yr of cement and will work alongside a separate grinding facility being constructed in Tete in Mozambique.

Despite Zimbabwe's economic collapse, PPC has been there since 2000, and its plants there are among the most modern in Southern Africa, serving both Zimbabwe and neighbouring export markets. The Zimbabwe mill is one of four plants SA's largest cement maker is building in the rest of Africa to increase sales as growth in its home country slows.

The new plant will have a cement capacity of about 1Mta and will coincide with the construction of a separate grinding facility in the neighbouring territory of Tete in Mozambique.
