Extreme manufacturing danger: the steel mill cobble. By Mark Benson on 6th ... and it goes without saying that those in the vicinity of strips of molten metal need to be extremely careful. ... All of a sudden the continuous roll of steel will come to an abrupt halt although the steel behind is still being pushed through the working rollers at ...

In hot rolling mills, premature failure of rolls is a major concern as it adversely affects the mill operation as well as production. Analysis of failed roll materials and actual rolling conditions in service are therefore necessary to understand the roll failure mechanism and thereby improve the wear resistance and extend the service life of rolls.

Hot rolling is a metalworking process that occurs above the recrystallization temperature of the material. After the grains deform during processing, they recrystallize, which maintains an equiaxed microstructure and prevents the metal from work hardening. The starting material is usually large pieces of metal, like semi-finished casting products, such as slabs, blooms, and billets.

Applications for these rolls include hot strip mill finishing train, rod and bar mill finishing, and universal mill finishing. Because of the excellent properties of these rolls, new applications are continuously being investigated and tried. Customers are also looking to see production improvements by eliminating mill down time through shorter roll changes. This may be accomplished by modernizing the mill window and incorporating quick work and in some cases back-up roll change schemes.

TANDEM COLD MILL Tandem cold-mill solutions from Primetals Technologies stand for high product yields combined with flexible production, low operational costs and simplified maintenance work. Depending on the product mix, the production capacity of continuous tandem mills from Primetals Technologies can exceed 1.2 million tons per year.

[1-3], as well as work rolls crossing and shifting (RCS) [4] mills have been introduced and developed to improve the strip shape and profile. The PC mill was first used commercially at Nippon Steel's Kimitsu Works in 1991 [1], and it has been commonly used in hot rolling mills for plating and stripping as a finishing mill.

The mechanical rolling conditions in hot strip mills are precisely defined by various variables, which are taken directly froth the rolling schedule (separation force, torque. speed. strip thickness) or calculated from figures of the rolling schedule and dimensions of the mill (strip reduction, roll diameter etc.).

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies now offers hot-strip mill operators a new method for changing the pinch rolls in downcoilers. The pinch-roll unit, designed as a quick-exchange cassette, can be replaced within just ten minutes without additional interruption of production. That saves up to eight hours typically required when applying conventional solutions.

1 HOT ROLLING PRACTICE – An Attempted Recollection Saral Dutta. B. Tech. (Hons.), I.I.T. Executive Director, ISP & RMD, SAIL (Retired) Rolling is a metal forming process in which metal stock is passed through a pair of rolls.

Mar 16, 2016· To make gauges lighter than the hot strip mill can produce economically. To produce sheet and strip of more uniform thickness. Cold rolled base – Coils that are cold worked or reduced to gauge on the tandem mill. Cold rolling – Term applied to the operation of passing unheated metal through rolls for the purpose of reducing its gauge.

John G. Lenard, in Primer on Flat Rolling (Second Edition), 2014. 4.1.1 Hot, Cold and Warm Rolling. The rolling process may, of course, be performed at low and high temperatures, in the cold rolling mill or in the hot strip mill, respectively, as already mentioned in Chapter 1.The formal distinction between what is low and what is high temperature, and in consequence, what are the cold and hot ...

Sep 11, 2014· Customers often ask us about the differences between hot rolled steel and cold rolled steel. There are some fundamental differences between these two types of metal. The differences between hot rolled steel and cold rolled steel relates to the way these metals are processed at the mill, and not the product specification or grade.

The Hot Rolling Process The primary function of the Hot Strip Mill is to reheat semi-finished steel slabs of steel nearly to their melting point, then roll them thinner and longer through 12 successive rolling mill stands driven by motors totaling 77,000 hp, and finally coiling up the lengthened steel sheet for transport to the next process.

Rolling processes 5-1 introduction: Rolling is the process of reducing the thickness or changing the cross section of a long workpiece by compressive forces applied through a set of rolls, as shown in figure (5-1). Fig. (5-1) Most rolling is carried out by hot working, called hot rolling, owing to the large amount of deformation required.

Dec 13, 2013· In a Hot rolling mill especially in a steel industry where highly integrated automation is used for high quality steel strip production, how roll change can be done in auto mode or in manual mode through HMI.

HOT STRIP MILL — HIGHEST PERFORMANCE FOR NEW AND EXISTING STEEL MILLS The demand for hot rolled strip is growing in multiple ways. To remain competitive, new and existing mills must meet this challenge in the best possible way. The production of hot strip is a .
